The Siglufjörður Folk Music Festival (Þjóðlagahátíð) is held each July in Siglufjörður, a small fishing town at the end of a narrow fjord in the far north of Iceland. The town itself is one of the most photogenic in the country — colourful timber houses, a working harbour, and mountains that rise steeply on three sides. The festival has been running for several decades and is widely considered the most important traditional and folk music event in Iceland.

The festival programme

Over five days, the festival fills the town with performances of Icelandic folk and traditional music, dance, and song. Stages are set up at various locations — indoor halls, the harbour area, and outdoor spaces throughout the town. Participation is part of the spirit: workshops in traditional instruments, group singing sessions, and informal jam sessions alongside the formal concerts are all part of the programme.

The Icelandic folk traditions celebrated here include rímur (a centuries-old form of chanted verse), traditional dance forms, and music on instruments like the langspil (a traditional Icelandic string instrument). International folk acts from Scandinavia and beyond also appear on the programme, giving the event an accessible quality even for visitors who are not experts in Icelandic traditional music.

Most of the events are affordable or free. A wristband covering access to the main programme is typically in the range of 10,000 to 20,000 ISK, though the festival is not as commercialised as larger Icelandic music events. Check thjodlagahatid.is for the 2027 programme and ticket details, usually published in spring.

Getting to Siglufjörður

Siglufjörður is approximately 430 km from Reykjavík and around 40 km north of Akureyri. The road from Akureyri through the Héðinsfjörður tunnel system is the standard route. Domestic flights to Akureyri, followed by a hire car, is the most practical approach for visitors flying in. The drive from Akureyri to Siglufjörður takes around 45 minutes to an hour through mountain scenery.

Accommodation in Siglufjörður is very limited — a small guesthouse, a few rental apartments, and some camping. Book months in advance or plan to stay in Akureyri and drive in each day. The town has a handful of restaurants and cafés; the festival brings additional food stalls.

Worth combining with

Siglufjörður is close enough to Akureyri to make a natural pairing. From Akureyri, Húsavík’s whale watching, the Mývatn area, and the Tröllaskagi peninsula are all accessible. Our Siglufjörður guide covers what to see in and around the town, and our Akureyri guide covers the nearest large town. The 7-day Iceland itinerary includes the north of Iceland and can be used as a planning framework.

If you are making a longer stay in the north, guided tours out of Akureyri — whale watching from Húsavík, Mývatn lake trips, and midnight sun excursions — are easy to combine with the festival weekend — browse Akureyri area tours on GetYourGuide.
