Laugarás Lagoon: New Geothermal Pool Opens on the Golden Circle

Steam rising from a geothermal hot pool in Iceland — the new Laugarás Lagoon has opened on the Golden Circle route

A new geothermal bathing destination has opened at Laugarás in southwest Iceland, positioned on the Golden Circle route and offering visitors a second major lagoon experience alongside the Fontana Geothermal Baths at Laugarvatn.

What Laugarás Lagoon offers

The facility is built across two levels, with connected heated pools drawing on the natural geothermal activity that runs beneath much of southern Iceland. Temperatures are maintained at comfortable bathing levels year-round. The complex includes an on-site gourmet restaurant, which distinguishes it from more utilitarian thermal pools and positions it as both a bathing facility and a dining destination.

The lagoon opened in 2026 and represents part of a broader expansion of premium bathing infrastructure across Iceland, which now includes the Sky Lagoon near Reykjavik, the renovated Blue Lagoon in Reykjanes, Vök Baths in the East Fjords, and the Mývatn Nature Baths in the north.

How to visit

Laugarás sits roughly 75 km east of Reykjavik and is straightforward to include in a Golden Circle day trip. The standard Golden Circle circuit covers Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal field, and Gullfoss waterfall — Laugarás is accessible from the same road corridor, making it a logical addition to the route rather than a separate excursion.

The nearest larger service town is Selfoss, around 20 km to the southwest. Pre-booking is expected to be essential on summer weekends, when Golden Circle traffic is at its heaviest.

Planning your visit

June offers some of the best conditions for geothermal bathing in Iceland — long daylight hours allow evening swims in the Midnight Sun, and the weather window between late June and August is the most reliably mild of the year. Admission prices had not been officially confirmed at time of writing; check the facility’s website for current rates and booking information before departure.
