Þjóðhátíð — Iceland’s largest outdoor gathering — takes place on the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) from July 31 to August 3, 2026. Around 15,000 people descend on islands with a permanent population of roughly 4,000, for four days of music, dancing, bonfires, and the famous Saturday night fireworks display over Herjólfsdalur valley.

What Þjóðhátíð Is

The festival began in 1874 as a substitute celebration for Icelanders on Vestmannaeyjar who couldn’t attend that year’s national millennial festival on the mainland. The tradition has continued ever since, evolving into a beloved institution that Icelanders plan their summers around.

The main venue is Herjólfsdalur — a natural bowl formed by an ancient crater just outside the main town. The valley’s steep grassy walls create a natural amphitheatre; the stage sits at the bottom. Camping is allowed on the surrounding slopes, and the atmosphere during the bonfire and fireworks climax on Saturday night — with thousands gathered on the hillside — is one of Iceland’s most distinctive collective experiences.

The programme includes:

  • Live Icelandic music across four stages, from folk to pop
  • The Þjóðhátíðarelden — the great bonfire, lit ceremonially on Saturday night
  • A fireworks display launched from the crater walls
  • Traditional singing, including communal performance of Eldgamla Ísafold
  • A fair, craft market, and food stalls in the town centre

Getting to the Westman Islands

The islands are accessible two ways:

Ferry from Landeyjahöfn (South Iceland coast): The quickest crossing — approximately 35 minutes. This is the recommended route during Þjóðhátíð. Bookings fill up weeks in advance; reserve your sailing before July.

Ferry from Þorlákshöfn: A longer crossing (around 2.5–3 hours) that operates as an alternative when Landeyjahöfn ferry runs are disrupted by surf conditions.

Domestic flight from Reykjavík Domestic Airport: Eagle Air operates a 25-minute service, but availability is limited during the festival period.

Our Westman Islands guide covers the ferry timetables, the town itself, and what the islands look like outside of festival season — including the extraordinary geology shaped by the 1973 Eldfell eruption. Practical Notes for 2026

Accommodation on the islands sells out entirely during Þjóðhátíð. Most visitors camp in Herjólfsdalur or on designated camping areas in town — a wristband covers camping access. Book ferry passages as early as possible, and confirm vehicle reservations if you plan to take a car across.

Weather on the islands in late July/early August can shift quickly — bring waterproof layers regardless of forecast.
