Akureyri Pink Day 2026

Akureyri Pink Day is North Iceland’s main LGBTQ+ community event, held annually in Akureyri — Iceland’s second city, located on the southern shore of Eyjafjörður. The event is smaller in scale than Reykjavík Pride but carries a strong community spirit and draws visitors from across the north of the country as well as travellers who time their road trip to coincide with it.

What the day involves

The centrepiece is a parade through the centre of Akureyri, typically starting from the main shopping street and moving through the town. Participants are encouraged to wear pink — and most locals do. After the parade, the programme moves to the main square and surrounding spaces, with live music, speeches, food vendors, and community stalls. The atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive, with families and older residents participating alongside younger crowds.

The event is free to attend. Performances are in Icelandic but the event is open to all, and English is widely spoken in Akureyri. Individual venues in the town centre sometimes run associated evening events — check local listings closer to the date.

Getting to Akureyri

Akureyri is approximately 390 km from Reykjavík by road, around 4.5 hours driving. Domestic flights from Reykjavík’s Domestic Airport (RVK) to Akureyri Airport run multiple times daily and take about 45 minutes — this is the fastest option if you are not renting a car. The town is compact and walkable once you arrive; the parade route runs through the central streets.

The event falls in early August, which is one of the warmest periods in North Iceland. Temperatures in Akureyri in August often reach 15°C to 18°C — warmer than Reykjavík at the same time due to its sheltered fjord location. Still, pack a light layer for the evening.
