Iceland SIM Card and eSIM Guide
Iceland has good mobile coverage on the Ring Road and in all towns. The main gaps are in the highlands and very remote fjord sections. For most travellers, a local SIM or eSIM gives adequate connectivity throughout the main tourist areas — and good connectivity is practically important in Iceland, where road conditions, weather, and opening hours all change and need checking in real time.
Icelandic Networks
Iceland has three main mobile networks. All three offer tourist SIM cards at Keflavík Airport and in Reykjavík.
Síminn
Iceland’s largest and most established network with the broadest rural coverage. This is the recommended choice if you’re driving the Ring Road or visiting more remote areas. Tourist SIM cards are available at Keflavík Airport arrivals (Síminn desk, open for most flight arrivals) and at Síminn shops in Reykjavík.
Tourist SIM pricing (approximate as of 2026): 5GB data + calls and texts from approximately ISK 3,500. Higher data plans available. Check siminn.is for current tourist plans.
Coverage: Excellent in Reykjavík and all major towns. Good 4G on most of the Ring Road. Gaps in the East Fjords’ most remote sections and parts of the Westfjords.
Nova
Strong urban coverage and competitive prices for data-heavy users. Popular with locals for its data allowances. SIM cards available at convenience stores (including 10-11 and N1 petrol stations) and at the airport.
Tourist plans: 10GB data tourist plans from approximately ISK 3,000 as of 2026. Good value for data-heavy travellers. Coverage slightly less comprehensive than Síminn in rural areas.
Vodafone Iceland (Tal)
Part of the Vodafone group. Available at the airport and in Reykjavík. Coverage is broadly comparable to Síminn. Tourist SIMs from approximately ISK 3,000 as of 2026.
Which network to choose? For Ring Road road trips and any travel outside Reykjavík, Síminn is the safest choice for coverage. Nova is worth considering for longer stays in Reykjavík or other cities where data price matters more than rural coverage. Vodafone Iceland is a reasonable option if you’re already a Vodafone customer and want a familiar interface.
eSIM Options
If your phone supports eSIM (most flagship phones from 2019 onwards — iPhone XS and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later), an eSIM avoids the need to swap physical SIM cards. You activate it before departure and have data from the moment your plane lands, without queuing at an airport desk.
Airalo
The most widely used eSIM marketplace for travellers. Airalo sells eSIMs from multiple providers, including Iceland-specific plans that run on local Icelandic networks.
Iceland eSIM prices on Airalo (approximate as of 2026): from approximately €10–18 for 5–10GB. Purchase and activate through the Airalo app (iOS and Android), available to download before departure.
How to activate: Download the Airalo app before travel. Purchase an Iceland plan. Install the eSIM following the app’s instructions (requires a QR code scan or manual profile installation). The eSIM activates when you arrive in Iceland and connect to a local tower. Keep your home SIM installed but switch to the Airalo eSIM for data.
Holafly
Another eSIM provider popular with travellers, often featuring unlimited data plans for Iceland. Prices approximately €19–29 for unlimited data plans as of 2026. Unlimited data is useful for those who stream maps, music, and videos heavily while travelling. Available at holafly.com.
Roaming from Your Home Carrier
If your home mobile plan includes international roaming, check whether Iceland is included. EU carriers often include Iceland as an EEA member, meaning free roaming data. UK networks vary — some include Iceland, some charge. US carriers (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T) typically include Iceland in international plans but with speed throttling after a certain amount.
Check your carrier’s Iceland roaming policy before departure. If Iceland is included, this may be the simplest option for a short trip. If not, a local SIM or eSIM will be significantly cheaper.
Coverage Notes by Area
Reykjavík and the Capital Region: Excellent 4G/5G coverage throughout. No issues.
Golden Circle and South Coast: Good 4G coverage throughout. The South Coast (Vík area) has reliable coverage.
Ring Road — full circuit: Good 4G for the majority. Expect short stretches without signal in:
- The deepest sections of the East Fjords (between fjords, in tunnels)
- Parts of Northeast Iceland between Mývatn and Húsavík
- Some elevated plateau sections between the north and south coasts
Westfjords: More limited coverage. Major settlements have 4G; narrow fjord sections and mountain roads may have limited signal. Síminn has the best coverage in this region.
Highlands: Very limited to no coverage. Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Sprengisandur, and other highland routes have minimal mobile signal. This is an emergency safety consideration: download offline maps before driving into the highlands. The 112 Iceland app (free, available for iOS and Android) transmits your GPS location to emergency services even without a mobile data connection via satellite — install it before any highland trip.
Key apps to download offline before departure:
- Google Maps: download Iceland region for offline navigation
- maps.me: open-source alternative with better highland road detail
- road.is app: live road conditions and closures (requires connection to update, so check before departing Wi-Fi)
- vedur.is app: weather forecast by location
- 112 Iceland: emergency GPS location app — mandatory for highland travel
Wi-Fi
Most Icelandic hotels, guesthouses, hostels, and cafés have free Wi-Fi. Reykjavík accommodation is reliably fast. Rural guesthouses vary — some have strong Wi-Fi, others have slow satellite connections. Campsites typically offer Wi-Fi in the service block (near reception and toilets) but not at pitch level.
Wi-Fi calling: If your home SIM plan includes Wi-Fi calling, this lets you receive calls and texts from your home number using hotel Wi-Fi, avoiding roaming charges entirely for voice calls while abroad.
Practical Buying Tips
- Buy at the airport (Síminn desk in arrivals) to have data immediately on arrival. No need to find a shop in central Reykjavík.
- Top up via the operator’s app rather than buying a new SIM if you run out of data.
- Standard SIM sizes: Icelandic operators offer regular, micro, and nano SIM cards. Ask for nano SIM for current iPhone and Android flagship models.
- Portable Wi-Fi hotspot: Some travellers hire a portable Wi-Fi device (e.g. from SimLocal or similar services) which allows multiple devices to share one connection. Useful for groups, but a shared SIM plan across two phones is usually simpler.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the best way to get mobile data in Iceland?
- An Icelandic local SIM or an eSIM gives the best coverage. Síminn, Nova, and Vodafone Iceland are the three main local networks — buy a tourist SIM at Keflavík Airport or in central Reykjavík. Airalo offers an Iceland eSIM for approximately €12–18 for 5–10GB, compatible with the main local networks.
- Does my EU roaming work in Iceland?
- Iceland is in the EEA but not the EU. EU roaming rights (free roaming within the EU) technically apply to Iceland as an EEA member — but check your specific network's roaming policy. Some EU networks include Iceland in their free roaming zone; others charge.
- Is there mobile coverage on the Ring Road?
- Yes, for the large majority of the Ring Road. 4G coverage covers most of Route 1. Gaps exist in the remotest sections (parts of East Fjords, some West Iceland sections). Highland F-roads often have no signal. Download offline maps (Google Maps or maps.me) before heading to remote areas.
- Can I buy a SIM card at Keflavík Airport?
- Yes. Síminn has a desk in the arrivals hall at Keflavík. Tourist SIM cards are available on arrival, saving the need to find a shop in Reykjavík. Prices are comparable to in-city prices — approximately ISK 3,000–3,500 for a tourist data SIM.
